There's one important exception, and it's exactly where stale pages mislead people. Model S and Model X earn nothing — Tesla removed them from the US program in March 2026. Here's the whole picture, model by model, as of July 13, 2026:

The one rule that actually matters

If you remember nothing else, remember this: the referral has to be attached before the order exists. Tesla ties the referral to the moment an order or reservation number is created, and it cannot be added afterward. So the sequence is simple. First: Open the referral link (or copy the code) before you configure anything. Tesla can't attach a referral once an order or reservation number exists, so it has to come first. Then: Build your car on Tesla's official store as usual — paint, wheels, interior, options. The referral stays attached to your session while you build. Finally: Before you pay, check that the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial (or the $400 solar discount) is listed. If it's there, place the order; the trial activates at delivery.

That's the entire trick. If you configure a car first and order without a code, you've missed it — there's no "add my referral after the fact." Is the program even still active?

Yes — it was reworked, not retired.

This is the question I get most, because so many pages read like the program vanished. What actually happened: early in 2026 Tesla dropped the old upfront cash discounts, removed Model S and Model X (March 2026), and made the headline buyer reward the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial. The program is alive; the old descriptions of it are dead. That single mismatch is why a beloved but un-maintained referral page can still rank while quietly misinforming every 2026 buyer who trusts it.

The referral reward is a software trial, not a discount on the car and not a tax credit — but it does stack on top of whatever incentives you separately qualify for. Now that the federal EV purchase credit has ended, knowing what's left matters more, so here's the honest, dated picture:

• The referral FSD trial — 3 months free, layered on top of everything below. Not a tax credit.
• Federal EV purchase tax credit — ended September 30, 2025. New Teslas ordered after that date don't get the old $7,500 point-of-sale credit.
• 30C home-charger credit — up to $1,000 for a home charger install in eligible areas, currently through June 30, 2026.
• Auto-loan-interest deduction — up to $10,000/yr of interest on qualifying US-assembled vehicles, through 2028.
• State, utility & Tesla APR promos — vary by location and month; verify current terms before you rely on them.
