FSD Went Subscription-Only in North America on 14 February 2026

The referral benefit is three months of Full Self-Driving. As of February, FSD has no purchase price — only a monthly one. That changes what three free months actually is.

On 14 February 2026 Tesla removed the option to buy Full Self-Driving outright in North America. FSD is now sold as a subscription at $99 per month in the United States and Canada. The referral programme did not change that day — but the thing the referral benefit is made of did.

What the benefit is now, precisely

The North American buyer benefit is three months of FSD (Supervised). At the published monthly rate that is roughly $297 of subscription before tax. It is not $297 off the car. It is three months during which a recurring charge that would otherwise apply, does not.

Those are genuinely different financial objects, and the difference is not pedantry:

A discount reduces what you owe. It is realised whether or not you use anything.
A free trial of a subscription is only worth what you would have paid anyway. If you were never going to subscribe to FSD, three free months is worth the use you get from it and nothing more. If you were definitely going to subscribe, it is worth the full $297.

The part that is easy to get wrong

Because FSD is now a subscription, three free months has a default ending that is not "it stops". Doing nothing at the end of month three converts the trial into a paid monthly charge. That is standard subscription behaviour and it is not hidden — but it does mean the benefit has an administrative task attached to it, which a discount would not.

The one action that turns this into a saving. On the day the trial starts, put its end date in a calendar. Not "sometime in month three" — the date. The Spring 2026 software update added a dedicated Self-Driving app on AI4 cars that handles subscription management directly, so the cancellation itself is quick. Remembering is the hard part.

A second price exists

In late January 2026 Tesla cut the FSD subscription to $49 per month for customers who had previously bought Enhanced Autopilot. That means "three months free" does not have one dollar value; it has at least two. For a prior EA owner the same benefit displaces roughly half as much spend. Nobody's referral page mentions this, and for that group it materially changes whether the benefit is a reason to do anything differently.

Why this desk is writing it as news rather than a guide

Because it is dated, and because the dating is the point. A page that says "the referral gives you three months of free FSD, worth about $297" is correct today and was misleading in January, when FSD still had a purchase price and "three months" sat against a very different baseline. We would rather publish the change with its date than quietly update an evergreen page and pretend it always said this.
