A Tesla Referral Order on a Timeline: Worked Example
The referral rules get explained piece by piece across this journal — click first, check the summary, wait for delivery. This page assembles them differently: as one continuous timeline, so you can see how separate rules line up against each other in a single order rather than as a list of instructions.
Day 0 — the link, before anything else
The referral link is opened before the configurator, in the same browser session. This is the one non-negotiable step: once an order or reservation number exists, a referral cannot be attached retroactively (see how to apply a code at checkout for why). Nothing on screen confirms anything at this point — the attachment is silent, which is exactly why the later check matters.
Day 0, same session — configuring
Trim, paint, wheels, any options. Fifteen minutes or an hour, it makes no difference. Nothing on the configurator screens mentions the referral in either direction; it doesn't surface until the review step. People often abandon at this point believing something has gone wrong — nothing has.
Day 0 — the review screen, the only screen that matters
Before payment, the review screen lists a line confirming the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) referral trial alongside the vehicle price, options and destination fee. The vehicle price is identical to what a cold configuration with no code would show: the referral rides alongside the price, it does not move it. If that line isn't there, this is the moment to stop — everything after payment is unrecoverable.
Roughly two weeks later — delivery
The trial typically does not appear in the Tesla app on delivery day itself. It's tied to the vehicle's VIN being fully associated with the account, which commonly settles about a day afterwards. Once it appears, it runs for 3 months from that activation — not from the order date. That distinction is worth holding onto: an order placed early in a month and delivered late in the next one loses nothing, because the clock hasn't started.
What the totals come to
- Vehicle price: unchanged — the same total a no-code order would show.
- Buyer reward: 3 months of free FSD (Supervised), worth roughly $297 at about $99/month.
- Referrer side: $250 in Tesla Credits, one of up to 10 a referrer can earn in a calendar year — and subject to the 12-month expiry from the grant date.
Three checkpoints, in order
Reading your own order against this timeline, the three moments that decide the outcome are: the link opened before the configurator, the referral line visible on the review screen before payment, and the trial appearing in the app within a few days after delivery. The first two are entirely in your control; only the third involves waiting on anything.
