Model S and Model X Left the Referral Programme in March 2026

A referral link on an S or X order now does nothing. It is the most expensive way to waste one, because nothing on the order screen tells you it failed.

In March 2026 Tesla removed Model S and Model X from the referral programme. Referral benefits now apply to Model 3, Model Y and specific Cybertruck trims. The flagship cars, which carried the programme's most generous awards for years, carry nothing.

Why this one costs people the benefit

Eligibility failures are quiet. If you open a referral link and then configure a Model X, the link is accepted, the order proceeds, and no reward line appears. There is no error, no warning, and no prompt. A buyer who has read a 2024 write-up promising a substantial S/X award will complete the order believing the benefit is coming and discover otherwise after delivery — at which point nothing can be done, because a referral cannot be attached retroactively.

That combination — silent failure plus no retroactive fix — is what makes this specific change worth its own dated note rather than a line in a FAQ.

The current eligibility picture

The Cybertruck line is worth pausing on, because it demonstrates that Tesla excludes at trim level and not only at model level. "The Model Y is eligible" is a safe statement today; "the Cybertruck is eligible" is not.

The check that takes one minute

Before you configure anything, decide the model first and confirm eligibility second. If you are buying an S or X, the referral question is settled and you can stop thinking about it. If you are buying a Cybertruck, confirm the trim. If you are buying a Model 3 or Model Y, open the link before you configure — that is the only step where the timing can go wrong.

An order summary that shows no reward line is the answer, not a glitch. If you have configured an eligible car through a link and no benefit appears before the Place Order button, do not place the order and then ask about it. Ask first.

If you were planning an S or X order

There is no workaround, and anyone offering one is selling something. What there is instead is a genuine comparison to make: the Model Y L exists specifically for buyers who wanted three rows, and it is referral-eligible. Whether that is the right car is a separate question from whether it carries a benefit — but for a three-row buyer the two questions now have the same answer. The detail on the S/X removal is in why Model S and X lost the referral benefit, and if you are ordering an eligible car you can open the configurator with this desk's referral applied before you start.
