Why Model S and Model X Lost the Tesla Referral Benefit
I get this question from Model S and Model X shoppers more than almost any other: why doesn't a referral code do anything for them anymore? Here's what's actually confirmed, and where I'm careful to separate that from reasonable guesswork.
The confirmed fact
In March 2026, Tesla removed Model S and Model X from the US referral program. A referral link still attaches to the buyer's account the same way it does on any order, but it earns no benefit — no FSD trial, no discount, nothing — on an S or X order. Model 3, Model Y and eligible Cybertruck trims kept the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial. That's the entire confirmed change; everything past this point is context, not an official Tesla explanation.
What Tesla has and hasn't said
Tesla hasn't published a detailed public rationale for the S/X removal specifically — I'm not aware of an official statement that spells out "why," and I won't invent one. What's documented is the change itself and its timing, which I cite from Tesla's own referral program page alongside independent trackers (see sources below). If Tesla publishes an explicit reason, I'll update this note the same day, not retroactively backdate it.
The reasonable context, clearly labeled as context
A few things are worth knowing even though they're not a confirmed "reason": Model S and Model X are lower-volume vehicles than Model 3 and Model Y, and referral programs generally exist to drive volume among a manufacturer's highest-demand products. It would be consistent with that pattern for Tesla to concentrate the referral incentive on the cars it sells the most of. I want to be explicit that this is my read of the pattern, not something Tesla told me directly — treat it as informed context, not fact.
What this means if you're ordering an S or X
Don't budget on a referral trial for a Model S or Model X order — there isn't one, and a code applied to that order won't change anything about it. The things actually worth checking instead: any live Tesla APR or lease promo (these apply regardless of the referral program and change month to month, so check Tesla's current offers directly), and the auto-loan-interest deduction — up to $10,000 a year in interest on qualifying US-assembled vehicles, through 2028 — if you're financing. Neither is a substitute for the referral trial, but both are real and apply independent of it.
If you're cross-shopping S/X against Model 3, Y or Cybertruck
A referral code is a genuine, if modest, factor in that comparison — roughly $297 of value on an eligible model, $0 on S/X. It shouldn't be the deciding factor on its own, but it's one more data point worth having accurately, which is exactly why I keep this page dated rather than letting the exclusion go unmentioned the way older referral pages still do. See the full model-by-model picture in what a code is worth in 2026 and the dated history of how the program got here in is the program still active?
