Where Exactly the Tesla Referral Code Goes at Checkout (2026)
People don't usually ask whether a referral works, they ask where on screen it's supposed to show up — because Tesla's checkout doesn't have a box labeled "referral code" the way most sites do. Here's exactly where to look, screen by screen, from my own order.
Screen 1: the referral link landing page
Clicking ts.la/<code> or tesla.com/referral/<code> takes you to Tesla's normal model page — there's no visible "code applied!" banner here. That's the detail that trips people up: the confirmation isn't on this screen, it's silently attached to your browser session. Don't look for proof yet; just proceed into the configurator from this same tab.
Screen 2: the Design Studio (configuring the car)
Paint, wheels, interior, Autopilot/FSD add-on, financing — none of these option screens mention the referral either. It's still attached in the background. I mention this because I've had a friend panic mid-configuration, convinced they'd lost it. You haven't; it just doesn't surface until the review step.
Screen 3: the order review / summary — this is the one
At the final review screen, before the payment step, look for a line item confirming the referral benefit — on my order it read as a line noting the Full Self-Driving trial tied to the referral. This is the only screen in the entire flow that actually shows it. If it's not here, the referral did not attach, and going back to "reconfigure" a car you've already reached this screen for won't add it retroactively.
Screen 4: the confirmation email
After you place the order, the confirmation email repeats the same line. I treat this as my saved receipt — see my delivery-day checklist for why I keep it until the trial actually shows up in the app.
Solar checkout is a different flow entirely
If you're ordering Tesla Solar instead of a vehicle, the referral shows as a $400 discount line on the solar quote/contract screen, not an FSD line — it's a separate product flow with its own review step. Detail in do referral codes work on solar?
The one screen that doesn't exist
There is no screen, at any point, where you can type a referral code in after you already have an order or reservation number — I've looked. That's why clicking the link first matters more than any specific screen: it determines whether screen 3 shows the line at all.
