The 4 Questions That Decide Your Tesla Referral Reward

"What do I actually get from a Tesla referral code" gets asked as if there were one number to hand back. There isn't. The individual rules are covered elsewhere on this site — model eligibility, timing, solar — but rarely assembled together as one decision, so here it is: four independent questions, and running your own order through them tells you exactly what you're getting, before you order.

Question 1: which model or product, and which trim?

This is the biggest lever. Model 3, Model Y, and eligible Cybertruck trims (Premium AWD and Cyberbeast) get the standard buyer reward. Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD get nothing — they're excluded from the US program entirely. Tesla Solar sits in its own category with a different reward shape. Full detail on the trim-level exclusions: Cybertruck eligibility and why Model S/X lost the benefit.

Model / product2026 referral benefit (US)Notes
Model 3 3 months free FSD (Supervised) All trims eligible in the US.
Model Y 3 months free FSD (Supervised) All trims eligible in the US.
Cybertruck 3 months free FSD (Supervised) Premium AWD & Cyberbeast only — Dual Motor AWD is excluded.
Tesla Solar $400 off Solar Panels & Solar Roof. Counts as a separate referral from a car.
Model S None Removed from the US referral program in March 2026.
Model X None Removed from the US referral program in March 2026.

Values reflect Tesla's US program as of July 13, 2026. FSD (Supervised) lists at about $99/mo, so 3 months ≈ $297. Tesla adjusts terms often — always confirm the reward in your order summary before you pay.

Question 2: did you click the link before an order number existed?

This is the one nobody's model eligibility can save them from. Tesla attaches a referral at the moment an order or reservation number is created, never afterward. Answer "no" to this question and the answer to every other question stops mattering — a Model Y ordered without a code first gets exactly what an ineligible Model X gets: nothing. The full sequence, and what your specific options are if you already ordered, are in can you add a code after ordering? and how to apply it at checkout.

Question 3: vehicle, or Solar — and are you treating them as one order or two?

A vehicle referral and a Solar referral are separate transactions with separate rewards: the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial on an eligible car, or $400 off Solar Panels or Solar Roof. One household can use a code for each. What trips people up is assuming a single code applied once covers both — it doesn't. Each order needs its own link opened before it starts. Detail: do referral codes work on solar?

Question 4: are you the buyer, or the referrer — and has the referrer hit the cap?

The buyer's answer only depends on questions 1–3 above. The referrer's answer has one more condition: $250 in Tesla Credits per successful referral, capped at 10 in a calendar year. A referrer who's already banked ten this year gets zero for an eleventh — the buyer still gets their full reward either way, since the cap only ever limits the referrer's side.

Run your own order through it

Five scenarios, worked through all four questions:

ScenarioQ1 model/productQ2 clicked first?Result
Model 3 buyer, link opened before configuringEligibleYes3 months free FSD (≈ $297)
Model Y buyer, configured first, found a code afterEligibleNoNothing — the code never attaches
Model X buyer, link opened firstExcludedYesNothing — model isn't eligible
Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD, link opened firstExcluded trimYesNothing — trim isn't eligible
Solar Roof order, link opened firstEligibleYes$400 off

Values reflect Tesla's US program as of July 13, 2026. Run your own order against these four questions before you assume a figure applies to you.

The order these questions matter in: timing (Q2) can zero out an otherwise-eligible order; model/trim (Q1) can zero out a perfectly-timed one. Neither question alone tells you the answer — you need both, plus which product (Q3) and whose side you're asking about (Q4).
