FSD Is $49 a Month for Prior Enhanced Autopilot Owners
Same three-month referral trial, roughly half the value — if you already bought Enhanced Autopilot. It is the clearest case of a benefit being worth different amounts to different people.
In late January 2026 Tesla cut the Full Self-Driving subscription to $49 per month for customers who had previously purchased Enhanced Autopilot. Everyone else pays $99. The referral benefit — three months of FSD (Supervised) — is described identically for both groups.
The arithmetic
- New buyer, no prior Enhanced Autopilot: three months displaces 3 × $99 ≈ $297.
- Prior Enhanced Autopilot owner: three months displaces 3 × $49 ≈ $147.
Same benefit line in the same order summary, roughly half the displaced spend. That is not a complaint about the programme — the trial is worth what it saves you, and it saves an EA owner less because that owner already pays less.
Why this is worth publishing
Because almost every referral page in this category quotes a single figure for what the benefit is worth, and a single figure cannot be right for a population containing two subscription tiers. A page that says "the referral is worth about $297" is overstating it by roughly 2× for a specific, identifiable group of readers — the group most likely to be buying a second Tesla, and therefore most likely to be reading about referrals in the first place.
Why two tiers exist at all
Enhanced Autopilot was sold as a mid-tier package: navigate-on-autopilot, automatic lane changes, summon and autopark, without the full FSD feature set. Customers who bought it paid once for a capability that has since been folded into the subscription product. The reduced rate is the acknowledgement of that — it prices the subscription as an upgrade from what someone already owns, rather than as a purchase from zero.
That framing is the reason the referral trial lands differently for the two groups. For a first-time buyer, three free months is three months of a capability they have never had. For an EA owner it is three months of the increment between what they already paid for and the full product. The experience is different, and so is the number.
What it changes in practice
For an EA owner weighing whether the referral benefit is a reason to order now rather than later, the honest answer is that it is a smaller reason than the headline implies. The rest of the ordering logic — the timing rule, the eligibility rules, the fact that a link cannot be added afterwards — is identical. Only the value is different.
It also cuts the other way. If you are the referrer rather than the buyer, this has no bearing on you at all: your side of the transaction is Tesla Credits, and the amount reported for the US is contested between sources at $250 and $500. We are not going to pick one. The number that is true is the one your own account shows.
