Depending on which 2026 page you land on, a successful referral pays the referrer either $250 or $500 in Tesla credit. Both numbers are still circulating. Here's which one I trust, and why.
Here's a myth I want to correct before it spreads any further: the number Tesla actually pays a referrer isn't as settled as most pages make it sound. Depending on which 2026 source you land on, you'll see either $250 or $500 in Tesla credit for the exact same kind of referral.
The two figures, side by side
One 2026 source reports the referrer credit at $500. Several others — Tesla's own support page among them — report $250. That's not a rounding difference or a regional split; it's two different numbers being stated as fact, for the same US program, in the same year.
Which one I trust, and why
This site's own figure has stayed at $250, checked against Tesla's official refer-and-earn page rather than a blog post. A single source claiming $500 doesn't outweigh the program's own documentation — but I'm also not going to pretend the disagreement doesn't exist. If you want the receipts rather than my word, both are cited below; go read the primary source yourself.
What hasn't moved, whichever number is right
The buyer side of this is stable regardless: a referral still gets the buyer 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y, and the eligible Cybertruck trims. Model S and Model X are still excluded — that removal happened in March 2026, and nothing in this referrer-reward disagreement changes it.
Why the confusion probably started
The March 2026 change eliminated the old upfront cash discount in favor of the current software-trial structure. Any time a program swaps a flat cash number for something with more moving parts, old figures tend to keep circulating alongside the new ones before anyone double-checks them. That's my best guess at how $500 is still out there.
What to actually do with this
If you're sharing your own code and telling a friend what you'll earn, don't quote either number as gospel — open your own account in the Tesla app before you promise anything. If you're the buyer, this disagreement costs you nothing either way; the referrer's number is invisible to you. Either way, confirm whatever figure is showing matches the current benefit table on this site, and treat any number you read — including here — as something to verify against Tesla's own page before you rely on it.
