7 Tesla Referral Code Mistakes Buyers Make (And How to Avoid Them)

I've now walked enough friends and readers through this that the mistakes repeat. Here are the seven I see most, in the order they tend to cost people the most value, each with the quick fix.

1. Ordering before opening a referral link

The single most common one. Tesla attaches a referral at the moment an order or reservation number is created, and never afterward. Fix: open the link before touching the configurator, every time — see the full sequence in how to apply it at checkout.

2. Assuming Model S or Model X qualifies

Both were removed from the US referral program in March 2026. A valid code applied to an S or X order attaches to the account but earns the buyer nothing. Fix: check eligibility before you rely on the trial as part of your budget — Model 3, Model Y and eligible Cybertruck (Premium AWD/Cyberbeast) still qualify.

3. Confusing the code and the link

A referral link is just the code wrapped in a URL — some buyers look for a second field to enter a "code" after already clicking a link, and find nothing, because there's nothing more to enter. Fix: read code vs link once; it's a two-minute fix for a recurring point of confusion.

4. Trusting a page that mentions "free supercharging"

That was the buyer benefit years ago, not in 2026. Pages still describing it haven't been updated and shouldn't be trusted for anything else either. Fix: use the dated changelog in is the program still active? to sanity-check any page's claims.

5. Not confirming the reward line before paying

The order-review screen is the only place that actually confirms attachment — see exactly where it appears. Skipping this check means finding out after the fact whether it worked. Fix: read the summary line by line before you place the order, not after.

6. Treating a vehicle and a solar referral as the same transaction

They're separate. A household can use one referral on a car (3 months of FSD) and a different one on Solar ($400 off), or the same code on both, as two distinct orders. Fix: apply the link separately at the start of each order — detail in do referral codes work on solar?

7. As a referrer, losing track of the annual cap

Owners sharing their own code sometimes assume every successful referral pays out indefinitely. It's capped at 10 referrals per calendar year, each worth $250 in Tesla Credits. Fix: keep a rough count if you're sharing your code widely — walkthrough in share your code and earn $250.

The pattern behind all seven

Six of these come down to timing or reading the summary carefully. Click the link first, read the review screen before paying, and check eligibility for your specific model — that alone avoids most of this list.
