What I'd Tell a Friend Before Using a Tesla Referral Code (2026)
My neighbor texted me in June asking if I had "the Tesla code thing" before she configured her Model Y. That's the fourth friend I've walked through this in about a year, and I say almost the same five things every time. Here they are, in the order I actually say them.
1. It's a free-FSD trial now, not "free supercharging"
I tell them not to trust anything that mentions supercharging or a prize drawing — that's a program Tesla shut down years ago. In 2026 the real benefit is 3 months of free Full Self-Driving (Supervised), worth roughly $297 at about $99/month, and it applies automatically at delivery. No coupon, no form.
2. Click the link before you touch the configurator
This is the one I stress hardest, because it's the one mistake that can't be undone. Open the referral link first, then start building the car. Once an order or reservation number exists, Tesla won't attach a referral retroactively — I've had a friend learn this the hard way (more on that in the mistakes I made with my own first code).
3. It costs you nothing, and it doesn't matter whose code you use
Every valid code gives the same buyer reward. I tell friends not to shop around for a "better" code — there isn't one. Use mine, use a stranger's on a forum, use their coworker's; the trial is identical. The only thing that changes is who gets the $250 Tesla Credit on the referrer's side, and that never affects the buyer.
4. Model S and Model X buyers get nothing
If a friend is cross-shopping a Model S or Model X, I tell them plainly: those two were removed from the US referral program in March 2026. A code adds nothing to that order. It's still worth using on a Model 3, Model Y or eligible Cybertruck (Premium AWD or Cyberbeast), just not on S/X.
5. Ask about the loan-interest deduction, separately
Since the federal EV purchase credit ended September 30, 2025, the referral trial isn't the only thing worth knowing about. If they're financing, I mention the auto-loan-interest deduction — up to $10,000 a year in interest on qualifying US-assembled vehicles, through 2028 — as something their tax preparer should factor in. I'm careful to say it's separate from the referral and I'm not a tax advisor; I just don't want them to miss it. Full picture, with sources, is in what still stacks in 2026.
A real 2026 example
My neighbor ended up ordering her Model Y in June 2026. She opened the link first, configured a Long Range in about twenty minutes, and the FSD trial line showed up in her order summary before she paid — exactly like it's supposed to. She texted me a screenshot of the order confirmation with "it's there!" three words, no punctuation to spare. That's the whole point of saying these five things out loud instead of assuming someone already knows them.
