The Spring 2026 Update Added a Dedicated Self-Driving App
Subscription management, usage history and tutorials, in one place on AI4 cars. It is also, quietly, where a three-month referral trial gets cancelled before it renews.
Tesla's Spring 2026 software update introduced a dedicated Self-Driving app for cars with AI4 (Hardware 4), alongside the "Hey Grok" wake word, Pet Mode, upgraded trip statistics and a 24-hour dashcam buffer. Why the subscription-management part is the referral story
Since 14 February 2026 FSD has been subscription-only in North America. That makes the referral benefit — three months of FSD (Supervised) — a free trial of a recurring charge rather than a discount. Free trials of recurring charges have one failure mode, and it is not the software: it is the calendar.
Before this update, managing an FSD subscription meant going and finding the setting. Now there is a single app whose job includes exactly that. The change is small and it removes the most common excuse for an unintended renewal.
The sequence worth adopting
On the day the trial starts, find the end date
Not the month. The date. The trial begins when it is activated on the account, not when the car is ordered.
Put it in a calendar with two days of margin
Two days, because the decision is worth making awake rather than on the morning of.
Decide once, in advance, what you will do
Keep it or cancel it. The trap is not choosing wrong; it is not choosing, which defaults to keeping it at $99 a month.
What the app does not do
It does not tell you when a referral trial started. That date comes from the account activity around delivery, not from the subscription screen, and the distinction matters because the trial does not necessarily begin the day the car arrives — it begins when the benefit is applied to the account.
It also does not warn you that a trial is about to convert. Tesla sends an expiry warning for Tesla Credits thirty days ahead; a subscription trial rolling into a paid month is ordinary subscription behaviour and does not come with the same courtesy. The practical consequence is that the only reliable reminder is the one you set yourself, on the day the trial starts, before you have any reason to think about it.
And it does not change what FSD can legally do where you are. Approval is a national matter: in Europe only a handful of countries had granted it by mid-2026, and the North American benefit exists precisely because the feature is available there. An app that manages a subscription is not the same as a feature that is cleared to operate.
What else in the update touches an owner's costs
The 2026.26 summer release that followed in August added Preferred Routes, Automatic Navigation, Grok commands and Supercharger Search. Supercharger Search is the one with a referral connection, though not in North America: in markets where the referral benefit is denominated in free charging rather than free software, finding stalls efficiently is the difference between spending a reward and letting it lapse.
