Using a Tesla Referral Code: A Dated 2026 Order Example
I've explained the referral rules piece by piece across this journal — click first, check the summary, wait for delivery. This note is different: it's one real order, traced start to finish with the actual dates and figures, so you can see how those separate rules actually line up in a single timeline instead of as a list of instructions.
The order: a Model Y Long Range, July 2026
The most recent order I walked someone through in full was a friend's Model Y Long Range, placed in the second week of July 2026. I'm using her dates because they're fresh enough that I checked every step against the current program as it happened, rather than reconstructing it from memory of my own 2022 order.
July 8 — the link, before anything else
She opened my referral link in a new tab before touching Tesla's configurator at all. That's the one non-negotiable step: once an order or reservation number exists, a referral can't be attached retroactively (see how to apply a code at checkout for why). No banner confirms anything on this screen — it just quietly attaches to the session.
Same session — configuring the car
Long Range trim, a paint upgrade, 19-inch wheels, no other add-ons. Took about fifteen minutes. Nothing on the configurator screens mentioned the referral one way or the other — that's expected; it doesn't surface until the review step.
The order review screen — the number that matters
Before she paid, the review screen listed a line confirming the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) referral trial, alongside the vehicle price, options and destination fee. The vehicle price itself was identical to what a cold configuration (no code) would have shown — the referral rides alongside the price, it doesn't move it. She placed the order once that line was visible, not before.
Roughly two weeks later — delivery
Her car was delivered around July 22. The FSD (Supervised) trial didn't appear in the Tesla app on delivery day itself — that's normal; it's tied to the vehicle's VIN being fully associated with the account, which took about a day. By July 23 it showed as an active trial under the car's software section, dated to run for 3 months from that activation, not from the July 8 order date.
What the numbers actually added up to
- Vehicle price: unchanged — the same total a no-code order would have shown.
- Buyer reward: 3 months of free FSD (Supervised), worth roughly $297 at about $99/month.
- My side, as the referrer: $250 in Tesla Credits, one of up to 10 I can earn this calendar year.
Nothing about this order was unusual — that's the point of writing it up. It's the same sequence I describe in the abstract elsewhere on this site, just with one real set of dates attached so you can see it isn't theoretical.
What I'd flag to anyone reading their own order this way
